Al Anbar International Airport

Infrastructure Design Services of Noktasal Proje Mühendislik

Al Anbar International Airport, constructed in the Kilo 35 region, 30 kilometers west of Ramadi city center in western Iraq, is a strategic project that will not only meet the transportation needs of the region, but also accelerate the economic transformation of Al Anbar Province. The approximately 15.3 million m² area is planned to include all the elements of a modern airport with passenger and cargo terminals, a single runway, wide apron areas, taxiways, a control tower and comprehensive service facilities. In this critical infrastructure investment, Noktasal Proje Mühendislik (NPM) has undertaken all stages of both infrastructure and superstructure design and formed the technical backbone of the project.

NPM’s Engineering Approach and Scope

NPM has adopted a multi-disciplinary project management model since the beginning of the project, and has observed full compliance with international standards (ICAO, FAA, IATA, ASTM) at every stage from runway, taxiway, apron design to all underground infrastructure systems of the project, from hydraulic modeling to 3DBIM modeling.

The runway, apron and taxiways, designed by taking into account the current climate data, ground characteristics and socio-cultural texture of the region, have been designed in dimensions that will allow the safe operations of wide-body aircraft in the 4E category. The load-carrying capacity of the runway pavement has been optimized using CBR test results and advanced paviment structural analysis methods; Polymer modified asphalt solutions were preferred for bituminous layers exposed to high temperatures.

The stormwater drainage system was dimensioned according to hydrograph analyses performed for 10-, 25-, 50- and 100-year flood scenarios, and was supported by closed pipelines, open channel sections and culverts to ensure rapid drainage of runway and apron surfaces. The wastewater sewer network was designed with flow projections based on the annual target of 700,000 passengers and terminal density coefficients; gravity lines, pumping stations and advanced biological treatment options were integrated. For drinking water supply, the storage tank capacity, pumping stations and fire water ring line that will meet the increasing passenger demand until 2035 were determined by hydraulic modeling.

Security Infrastructure and Internal Roads

In the first construction phase of the project, 17 kilometers of internal road surrounding the site and 32 watchtowers integrated into it were designed. Internal circulation roads, terminal-apron connections and logistics corridors have been designed to provide uninterrupted maintenance-repair access, and a pavement design has been applied to withstand heavy vehicle axle loads.

Environmental Awareness

NPM has applied low-carbon materials, rainwater harvesting and recycling principles in landscape irrigation, focusing on environmental sustainability.

Socio-Economic Contributions and Strategic Benefits

The airport will provide direct and indirect employment for thousands of people during both construction and operation, and will open new market doors for the agricultural, tourism and industrial sectors of Al Anbar Province. The free trade and industrial zone planned for the region will be integrated with global logistics networks through air cargo lines; thus, the export capacity of local producers will increase. The infrastructure solutions designed by NPM will provide low maintenance costs and high operational reliability, thus accelerating the return on public investment in the long term.

Factors that Bring the Project to Success

  • International Standard Compliance: Complete compliance with ICAO, FAA, IATA, NFPA and ASTM norms
  • Multi-Disciplinary Coordination: Synchronized work of geotechnical, transportation, hydrology, electrical-mechanical and architectural teams
  • Innovative Solutions: SCADA-controlled stormwater-wastewater integration
  • Local Context Sensitivity: Integration of cultural motifs with modern design, climate-focused material and system selection
  • Sustainability: Energy saving, water recovery and low emission strategies

Conclusion and Forward Looking

Noktasal Project Engineering has pioneered the aviation sector in Iraq by designing all infrastructure components of Al Anbar International Airport, from runway projects to apron projects, road projects to rainwater projects. Thanks to NPM's engineering expertise, innovative vision and commitment to international standards, the project is not only a technical success; it is also an example in terms of regional development, sustainability and cultural integration. has become a model.
